Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety falls into three main categories:

Prevention: Occurs through a system of safety standards that are enforced by inspections and can result in prosecution if the standards are not adhered to e.g. passageways must be kept free from clutter and obstruction, mandatory fire fighting equipment, equipment and aids to do your job safely and efficiently are available.

Compensation: Paid to those who suffer from work related injuries or diseases, providing they have not broken any rules specific to the workplace.

Rehabilitation: Provided to victims of work related injuries or diseases so that they can return to pre-injury duties.Occupational health and safety is about preventing work injury, illness and disease.

Each year in Australia one in every 12 workers gets an injury or illness from work (Work Cover NSW). Most of these injuries could have been prevented and we will explore what is required of you as an employee to minimise risks.

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Contribute to OHS in the workplace by raising specific OHS issues with appropriate people and provide feedback to supervisors on hazards and risks in the work area.
  • Identify relevant OHS legislation, your own rights and responsibilities as well as those of your employer.

It is important to remember that aspects of Occupational Health and Safety affect everything that we do in the workplace as well as ensuring that we have a safe environment in which to carry out our work.
